Our mission is to love God and love people by meeting them where they are and encouraging them toward a lifelong, joyous relationship with Jesus Christ.

Current Series: The Gospel of Mark
Sunday’s Message: “Incentives for Being a Good Listener”
Scripture: Mark 4:1-25
Big Idea: Christians are people who communicate with God.  We speak and listen to Him.  While speaking is important, how we listen makes a tremendous difference in our living fruitful and productive lives.

SUMMER CAMP  - You can still register Sunday
There are still openings for Utopia Summer Camp which continues Monday at 9 a.m. Salem parents can register their child Sunday in the Welcome Center after either service.  You can also register a child Monday morning at Salem, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The Salem day camp experience includes Bible lessons, sports, games and other fun recreational activities.  A free school lunch and a snack is provided.  The camp runs Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for children ages 4-12.  For more information, please pick up a camp brochure in the Welcome Center.

Summer Bible Study in Colossians begins this Wednesday, July 11th
Join us for six Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9:00pm.  Pastor Paul Tallaksen and Pastor Larry Miraldi will lead this study from July 11th to August 15th in the Welcome Center.  This study is for those new to the Bible as well as for those who are familiar with the Scriptures.

Register Sunday for ‘Backpacks’ race
Volunteers also needed for July 21 event
Registration for the 2nd annual “Booking It for Backpacks” 5K Race/Walk begins Sunday after both services in the Welcome Center.  The Utopia-sponsored race is set for Saturday, July 21, beginning at 9 a.m. in Clove Lakes Park adjacent to the Salem Church parking lot.

Last year’s race/run raised enough donations to purchase backpacks and school supplies for 635 Staten Island children in 8 elementary schools and for students from 5 churches, including Salem.  This year our goal is to supply more than 1000 backpacks.

This year the race is in memory of Jonathan J. Proce, an accomplished swimmer who drowned last summer while training to become an elite pararescue jumper for the U.S. Air Force.  Jonathan attended Salem and led a Bible study for young adults.  His parents, Ben and Susan Proce, are Salem members.

If you would like to volunteer as a race-day assistant, please visit the Welcome Center on Sunday or write “race volunteer” on your Communication Card and someone will get in touch with you.

This is week 5 of our series, “Undeniably You.”  It has been a great journey.  Several people have shared that they are walking closer to Christ and are gaining a better understanding of what it means to be a fully committed follower of Christ.  We have been learning in this series that every Christian has a purpose, a unique role to play in the work of God.  Bottom line: Every member of God’s family is a minister.

My message Sunday is based on Matthew 4:19. Entitled “Ministering in Your Parrish”, we will consider how to ensure we are on the right path to becoming the kind of ministers God wants us to be.  And, since it will be Mother’s Day, I will be sharing the stories of two women who made a huge impact on the kingdom because they embraced their role as ministers.

Please invite the special mothers (and grandmothers) in your lives to join us on Sunday.  The choir will also be singing.  It will be a time to celebrate.

I love you in Christ,
Pastor Eddie

Salem experienced a blessed time of worship last Sunday as we gathered for three beautiful services to celebrate Christ’s resurrection.  What a great ending to an incredible Easter season!  I pray that each of you had a wonderful Easter and found yourselves drawing closer than ever in your walks with Him.

This Sunday, we begin a new sermon series entitled UNDENIABLY YOU.  As a result of this sermon series my prayer is that every member of Salem Church would commit himself or herself to a Christian worldview and to using their time, talents and treasures to accomplish God’s purposes in the world.  Foundational to this is the belief that our God has an overarching purpose in the world, and He wants you and I to personally play a part in the accomplishing of it.

Join us Sunday for the first message in the series, “Embrace God’s Purpose”, from Acts 16:36.  And don’t forget, small groups begin this week!  Don’t miss this opportunity to dive deeper into the Word with your church family.

I’ll see you Sunday.

I love you in Christ,
Pastor Eddie

As we look ahead to our plans for celebrating Christ’s resurrection, it’s important to reflect on why He died to begin with.  He died to save sinners.

Only when we understand how serious and problematic sin is do we really appreciate the gospel of Jesus Christ.  This Sunday, we will begin a new series, Shades of Easter, with a sermon entitled “Help Needed!”  Through our study in Genesis 3 we will see that God’s grace through Jesus is truly the greatest message mankind has ever heard.

I’ll see you on Sunday.

There are so many biblical stories of men and women of courage and selflessness.  One well known Old Testament story of an individual that we should all strive to emulate is Joseph.  We see in Joseph that it is so vital to give your entire life over to God.

As we continue our Strengthening Our Core series this Sunday with a message entitled When God’s People Own Stewardship, we will take a closer look at this man of God and see how we can apply Joseph’s practice of stewardship into our own lives.

Haggai 1:7-10

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!  Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord.  “You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away.  Why?” says the Lord of hosts.  “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.”

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

                            - Romans 12:12

“Be constant in prayer.”  While this seems like a daunting task, our aim as Christians should be to make prayer a defining characteristic of our lives.  By understanding how to literally live in a state of prayer we can experience constant fellowship with God and, consequently, enjoy the incredible benefits that come along with that fellowship.

Join us this Sunday as we continue our STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE: Disciplines that Make a Difference series with “The Fellowship of Prayer”, based on Philippians 4:4-7.

 I’ll see you Sunday.

I love you in Christ,

Last week in our STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE series, we focused on the discipline of Bible Study.  This Sunday, we will be taking a look at a discipline that goes hand in hand with being in the Word - listening.

Hearing from God is not something that is only possible for super-spiritual people - it is possible for everyone who will listen. Not only is it possible for people to hear from God, it is essential. Join us Sunday as we see what Mark 4:1-20 teaches us about this important discipline.

I love you in Christ,

With Upward Basketball and Small Groups well underway and Team World Vision working to change the lives of children across the world, we are in the midst of an exciting season of ministry here at Salem.  But at the center of everything we do, our goal is to make the Word of God central in our lives.  Sometimes this is easier said than done.

On Sunday, as we continue our series STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE: Spiritual Disciplines that Make a Difference, our focus will be on the discipline of Bible study.  We’ll be looking at Proverbs 23:22-25 to understand how we as Christians can understand and apply the Bible to our lives to become more like Jesus.

Join us, and bring a friend!

I love you in Christ,
Pastor Eddie
